What
does a Catholic University have to offer? Roche, dean of Notre
Dame's College of Arts and Letters, looks at both the "challenges
and promise" of such a univeristy, writes Father Theodore
Hesburgh, CSC, in his foreword to this slim volume.
Despite George Bernard Shaw's remark that a Catholic University
is a "contradiction in terms," Roche argues that "the
Catholic tradition shares much in common with the ideals of a
university. He discusses the sacramental vision of Catholicism,
its elevation of tradition and reason, and its emphasis on the
unity of knowledge to pinpoint a university's Catholic identity.
