Women of Okinawa: Nine Voices from a Garrison Island

by Ruth Ann Keyso '91,Cornell University Press.

Three generations of women offer a living history of their lives on Okinawa, from the war years to today, when U.S. military bases loom large on the Japanese island.

From the older generation discussing the travails of the war years when the United States and Japan fought a major battle on the island, to the women who grew up during the American occupation, to the young women of today, who were born after the island reverted to Japanese control in1972, Women of Okinawa offers compelling accounts of lives lived in the shadow of a military presence.
