Are satellite dishes still proliferating outside the
dorms?
There seem to fewer than a couple of years ago, when dozens
sprouted from the south-facing windows of residence halls around
campus. They were especially popular in the men's dorms, where
friends often would chip-in to purchase total-game packages for
pro and college sports.
According to Scott Kachmarik, associate director, residence
life and housing, no campuswide policy has been developed yet
regarding satellite dishes; hall rectors still have discretion
as to whether to allow them. The apparent reduction in numbers
may be due to more sharing of dishes among rooms.
Certain restrictions do apply to the systems. They can't cause
a safety hazard, as happens when wires are taped down to the carpet
across a hallway or run through ceiling systems. Nor are students
allowed to drill holes in walls, window screens, ceilings or the
roof. Windows must be shut and latched over winter break to prevent
pipes from freezing.
