Domer in space

James D. Wetherbee, a 1974 Notre Dame graduate, unfurled a banner from the Notre Dame football team's 1973 national championship season -- his senior year -- while floating in the cockpit of the space shuttle Atlantis in fall 1997. Wetherbee served as commander of the mission, which retrieved astronaut Michael Foale from the Russian space station Mir.

During a visit to campus in Feburary 1998, Wetherbee presented the banner to football coach Bob Davie. It was the fourth shuttle misison for Wetherbee, who now also serves as deputy director of the Johnson Space Center, and each time he's brought along at least one Notre Dame object. In 1990 it was the Laetare Medal presented to math professor Albert F. Zahm in 1925 (Zahm was a pioneer in the study of aeronautics); in 1992 it was a commemorative of the University's sesquicentennial; in 1995 it was a pewter replica of the Main Building set in Lucite. On the 1995 flight, Wetherbee also took along a Notre Dame cap, which he later gave to Lou Holtz.
