Daws collegiate woman athlete of 1997

Soccer star Cindy Daws, who graduated from Notre Dame in 1997 and set a school record with 26 goals and 20 assists her senior season, won the Honda-Broderick Cup as the 1997 collegiate woman athlete of the year. Daws, who was playing for a semi-pro team in Japan in January 1998 when her selection was announced, led the Irish to the NCAA national championship in 1995 and a second-place finish in 1996. Her goal in overtime versus the University of Portland clinched the national title. Daws had earlier been named winner of the 1997 Honda Award for soccer. The Honda Awards recognize the top collegiate women athletes in 11 NCAA-sanctioned sports based on athletic achievement, academic excellence and willingness to serve their communities. Honda contributes $5,000 to the general scholarship fund of each winner's school. Other nominees for the top overall athlete honor included Chamique Holdsclaw of Tennessee's national championship women's basketball team and NCAA all-around champion in gymnastics Kim Arnold of Georgia.
