Jessica Chalmers, assistant professor of film, television and
theater, won off-Broadway's highest honor, an Obie, in May, 2000, for Jet Lag,
an innovative performance project she wrote. Combining multimedia and live performance, Jet
Lag weaves together the true stories of a yachtsman who in 1969 pretended to race
around the world but actually sailed in circles in the Atlantic Ocean sending out false
radio reports, and a woman who died of jet lag in 1970 after completing 167 consecutive
airline flights with her grandson while trying for six months to evade the boy's father. Notre Dame recently awarded a grant to Chalmers to develop a multimedia performance laboratory in Washington Hall. The playwright says she hopes to continue her work on experimental theater projects at the University. |
