Thomas G. Burish '72 gave up the presidency of one of the country's
top liberal arts colleges, Washington and Lee University, to take
the No. 2 executive's post at his alma mater. Trustees elected
him Notre Dame's new provost in July 2005
A distinguished researcher in clinical psychology, he also was
appointed professor of psychology.
Burish had been president of Washington and Lee, in Lexington,
Virginia, since 2002. Prior to that he had served as provost of
Vanderbilt University since 1993.
He succeeds Nathan Hatch, who resigned June 30 after nine years
as provost to become president of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem,
North Carolina.
Burish, 55, and his wife, Pamela, have two sons: Mark, a 2002
graduate of Princeton University, now an M.D./Ph.D. candidate
at Vanderbilt; and Brent, who earned a bachelor's degree in biological
science from Notre Dame in 2004 and a Master of Business Administration
from ND in May.
