The
Program
The Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program is
made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of
Education. This grant supports undergraduate students' scholarly
activities throughout the academic year and summer. Through
this support, the University of Notre Dame is playing a very
important role in preparing faculty by encouraging students
to pursue doctoral studies.
Program's
Objectives (Academic Year)
During the academic year, students participate in activities
that support and encourage a high level of educational achievement.
In addition, the program will also offer informal meetings
with faculty and graduate students as well as other cultural
and educational activities. Academic year activities are
specifically designed to prepare sophomores and juniors
to be candidates for the next summer's research component.
Program's
Objectives (Summer Research Component)
During the summer research component, students participate
in an intensive eight-week research experience as well as
weekly workshops on topics such as the nature of academic
life, standardized test preparation, writing and research
skills, and the graduate school application process. All
activities are designed to provide relevant experience and
information to students who are strongly considering pursuing
a career in academia.
Program's
Expectations (Summer Component)
Students are required to:
- Contact
and confirm the participation of a faculty advisor to
support and supervise the research program.
- Research experience with faculty mentor. Students are
expected to meet and consult with their advisor on a
regular basis throughout the term.
- Take a Research
methodology course
- Community Service, GRE Preparation, Graduate Application
work and Professional Development.
- Submit
an abstract and give an oral presentation about their
summer research.
- Submit
a final research paper that should reflect the time spent
engaged in research (15-20 pages).
- Complete
the entire eight-week program.
Stipend
Stipends will be awarded as students fulfill requirements
that comply with the guidelines set forth by the McNair
Scholars Program. All students in program are provided free
room and board as part of program.
Faculty
Guidelines
Faculty members volunteering to serve as research advisors
should:
- Be
on campus most of the summer session to direct and supervise
the student's research.
- Develop
the research project with the student. The project may
be part of the faculty member's ongoing research or may
be developed by the student in consultation with the faculty
member.
- Determine
the number of hours of academic credit to be awarded.
- Evaluate
the student's performance with a letter grade.
- Evaluate
the work of the student and the program at the conclusion
of the summer term.
- Make
every effort to attend the student's oral presentation
and the banquet in the latter part of the program.
- Each
faculty member will receive a research allowance to help
support the cost of the student's research.
