Almost Peaceful
No. D003
DVD, Region 2, 94 min, Color, French w/English subtitles, 2002
Set during the largely unexplored period immediately following WWII, the film follows a group of mostly Jewish Parisians who attempt to restart their lives and rekindle their capacity for happiness in the shadow of unspeakable horrors.

Amen
No. D004
DVD, Region 2, 130 min, Color, In English, 2002
A story of unwavering conscience and unspeakable horror, AMEN, dramatizes the all too true history of how religious leaders in Germany and the Vatican ignored the plight of Europe’s Jews during WWII.
When newly commissioned SS Lieutenant Kurt Gerstein witnesses the chemical disinfectant he’s helped perfect being used to systematically murder interred Jews, he has no choice but to act. The only sympathetic ear Gerstein is able to find is that of young Father Riccardo, a priest with deep ties to the Vatican. While Riccardo takes on the obstructive Vatican hierarchy, Gerstein must walk a tightrope between documenting and enabling the atrocities his fellow SS officers cold-bloodedly commit. As the two unlikely allies fight to reveal the truth to the Church and the world, they discover that the fates of a man of conscience committing treason for the sake of humanity and a man of God committing heresy to thwart genocide are ultimately the same.
Costa-Gavras reveals the heroism and deceit surrounding the Vatican’s response to the Holocaust with both suspenseful urgency and cool detachment, underscoring the disturbing gray areas of character that tolerated the Nazi atrocities that Gerstien and Riccardo beseech the Vatican to condem. Without sanctimoniousness, the bitter ironies and hollow victories that are at the heart of AMEN, incrimnate the Nazis, the Church and ultimately humanity itself.

To Be And To Have
No. D031
DVD, Region 1, 104 min, Color. French w/English subtitles
To Be and To Have, France’s highest grossing documentary of all time is an intimate and touching portrait of life inside a one-room schoolhouse in a rural French village and one of the most emotionally gratifying films about teaching ever made.
At the center of the story, and now an international celebrity, is George Lopez - a remarkably devoted teacher responsible for nurturing a dozen children ages 3-11 in all their school subjects and life lessons. Whether mediating fights, flipping omelets, or discussing a father’s illness with a troubled student, Lopez upholds a firm, but gentle paternal approach.
Director Nicholas Philibert’s incredible film demonstrates how a teacher, if well trained, dedicated and sensitive to a child’s educational and emotional needs, can hugely influence a generation of children at their most critical time of development. Those with warm memories of a favorite teacher will be deeply moved by this film.

First, she's teaching at an all-boys school; second, the five boys who have committed to the team are all hopelessly bad swimmers; third, she suddenly discovers she's 8 months pregnant and due for maternity leave.
Inspired by their darling coach's dream, the boys bumble through the spring and summer, preparing a routine for Tadano High's festival. They face great adversity: the derision of their fellow students, a swimming pool full of dead fish, the mounting pressures of college entrance exams, and worst of all, their own dismal record of constant failure. Their only encouragement comes from a gaggle of local drag queens and the crazy owner of an aquarium, whose idea of training them is making them polish fish tanks round the clock.
When autumn finally rolls around, the boys have not only miraculously perfected a truly unique routine, they've won the respect and participation of a whole crew of new teammates. On the eve of the festival, the performance is threatened by one last catastrophe. Will the waterboys' hard work be wasted, or can they paddle their way to the success and recognition they've worked so hard to win?
