What
is it?
Interlibrary
Loan is a service through which library materials not held within
the University of Notre Dame Library Systems may be requested
and obtained from other libraries.
Who
may use it?
All University
of Notre Dame law students, law faculty and law staff are eligible
to use the service. Interlibrary Loan requests may be turned
in at the Circulation Desk or submitted online. Ask a desk attendant
or a reference librarian for assistance.
How
long does it take?
The library
participates in several cooperative lending programs which offer
expedited processing of our Interlibrary Loan requests. Reciprocal
borrowing agreements within the state and participation in the
Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) allow us access to many
libraries' holdings--locally, regionally, and nationally. By
using one of the local or regional libraries, we generally are
able to provide books and/or photocopies of articles within
a week to ten working days.
What
kinds of material can Interlibrary Loan provide?
BOOKS:
Books can be borrowed in their original form or in microform.
When the item arrives, you will be notified by phone, e-mail,
or a note will be placed in your mailbox. The item can be picked
up at the Circulation Desk and there will be a wrapper on the
book indicating date due or other restrictions placed on the
title by the lending library. Depending on the policy of the
lending library, you may keep the item for a period of one to
four weeks.
PHOTOCOPIES
OF PERIODICAL OR NEWSPAPER ARTICLES:
Copies of articles from journals or newspaper that are not
available at Notre Dame are provided free of charge.
DISSERTATIONS
AND THESES:
Lending policies on these materials vary with each lending
library.
RARE BOOKS,
MANUSCRIPTS, ETC.:
Libraries generally do not lend rare books or manuscripts.
However, it may be possible to obtain a photocopy or microformat
copy.
ARCHIVAL
MATERIALS, U.S. STATE AND FEDERAL DOCUMENTS, FOREIGN DOCUMENTS:
Through membership in the Center for Research Libraries, the
library can obtain little-used research materials, such as
archival items and documents. Check with the Interlibrary
Loan Librarian for the Center's holdings.
