Sharpening Sanctions' Effectiveness

Francesco Giumelli, a Ph.D. candidate in political science at the Italian Institute of Humanistic Sciences in Florence and a visiting fellow at the Kroc Institute, is researching the goals of the European Union’s and the United Nations’ sanctioning policies. He discussed the conditions that lead to sanctions’ success.

The Sanctions Mystique: The Power and Perils of Multinational Economic Coercion

George A. Lopez, who was just installed as the Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., Professor of Peace Studies, presented this inaugural lecture on April 1, 2008. A professor at Notre Dame since 1986, Lopez is a leading scholar of repression and human rights violations, ethics and the use of force, and economic sanctions.

The 14th Annual Hesburgh Lectures featured Rev. J. Bryan Hehir, an internationally renowned theologian who specializes in Catholic social teaching and international relations.

Fr. Hehir is the Parker Gilbert Montgomery Professor of the Practice of Religion and Public Life at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

in the Great Lakes Region of Africa


Kroc Institute Visiting Fellow, Fr. Emmanuel Ntakarutimana is director of the Center Ubuntu, in Bujumbura, Burundi, which serves vulnerable children and families traumatized by genocide and conflict in Central Africa.

Fashion & Feminism in the Contemporary U.S. Women's Movement

Jo Reger, Associate Professor of Sociology & Director of Women’s Studies at Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan, spoke on fashion as one key to understanding the complex relationship between the political and the apolitical in social movements. Reger discussed how contemporary feminists embrace and reclaim aspects of femininity and sexuality through politicized dress, drawing on theories from fashion, feminism, and social movements.

Can Iraq Be Stabilzed?

Larry Diamond, professor of political science and sociology at Stanford University, addressed the political implications and prospects of the current situation in Iraq, and why achieving a national political bargain is vital to stabilizing Iraq and preventing a descent into a much larger and bloodier civil war.

Nuclear Abolition in 1986--and Now

Jonathan Schell, author of The Fate of the Earth, explained why nuclear weapons are still the first and greatest danger to the world. Describing the 1987 summit in Reykjavik, Iceland, during which Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev came close to abolishing nuclear weapons, Schell said it's time to work again toward a nuclear-free world.

Accounting for Evil: A Theory of Modern Genocide

Ernesto Verdeja, 2007-08 Kroc Institute Postdoctoral Scholar, presented a theory of the causes of modern genocide, looking at societal cleavages, radical political ideologies, profound crises, and the role of “moral bystanders.”  He examined four cases:  Armenia, the Holocaust, Cambodia, and Rwanda.
