Postdocs

Carsten Nowak
Carsten is pursuing research on the effects of climate change on the geographic ranges of hybridizing species in the swallowtail genus of butterflies. Carsten also is collaborating with Drs. Feder and Lodge to develop a microarray-based chip for the identification of non-native species in the ballast water of ships. Carsten's doctoral research considered the effects of environmental toxicants on Chironomus midges using genetic tools.

Doctoral students

Travis Marsico
Travis is a fourth-year Ph.D. student working on the responses of plant populations to climate change at the edge of their geographic range. He contrasts the potential of phylogenetically-related species to extend their range if dispersal was not limiting.
Jillian Mueller
Jill is a second-year Ph.D. student interested in the effects of climate change, habitat loss, and invasives on species conservation. She also is a member of the first cohort of GLOBES Fellows.
Derrick Parker
Derrick is a first year graduate student and a GLOBES Fellow.
Shannon Pelini
Shannon is a fourth-year Ph.D. student working on the biogeography of plant-insect interactions and the role of host plants in determining insect range shifts under climate change.
Kirsten Prior
Kirsten is a third-year Ph.D. student interested in the effect of invasive herbivores on native plants and endangered, native insects. She also examines the role of natural enemies to control invasive insect populations.

Reseach Technicians

Jason Dzurisin (Lab Manager)
Jason makes the Hellmann Lab run. He holds a bachelor's degree from Notre Dame and a master's degree from the Washington State University, Vancouver. He has expertise in the ecology, rearing, and conservation of Lepidoptera.
Chris Brown
Chris pursues a series of population genetic studies related to the development of microsatellites and other genetic markers in species of hybridizing butterfly.

Undergraduates

Katie Hackney (with Lodge Lab)
Rachel Hudak
Jessica Keppel
Maura Nowalk
James Nugent
Cat Pinnaro (with Lodge Lab)

Volunteers

Amy Bauer
Amy is a professional veterinarian who is helping the lab perform studies on genetic adaptation. She is currently working with our graduate students to develop techniques for assessing secondary chemicals in the host plants of herbivores.
Vince Hellmann
Vince dedicates time every year to work with the Hellmann Lab in the field. Vince can create amazing contraptions using duct tape and 2x4s.
