GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY
STX-50 Stress Path/Cyclic Triaxial Device: This is an electro-pneumatic testing system with direct digital servo-control of axial actuator and cell pressure. The device has a 20kN load frame and a double acting Bellofram diaphragm air cylinder with pneumatic servo-control of axial load or displacement. A pneumatic servo valve allows for closed loop computer control of cell pressure.
Strain-Controlled Triaxial Device: The load frame has a 50kN capacity and the range of loading rates is 1x10-5 mm/min to 9.99 mm/min. This system uses an air/water pressure system that can supply pressures up to 1000 kPa.
Resonant Column/Torsional Shear System: This system has closed-loop digital control of shear torque or angular displacement with floating torsional drive, and is designed to measure shear strains from 10-4% to 10%. An electrical servo motor actuator is used for the application of torsional loads.
Instron-Satec Systems Model 5590 – HVL Series Universal Testing System: This system has a hydraulically powered load frame with a capacity of 300kN and a maximum testing speed of 76 mm/min.

The lab is equipped with several methods of measuring displacements on the samples. Also, ultrasonic velocity can be measured during tests performed on all the devices using such methods as bender elements, caps with transducers embedded below the surface, and on-sample accelerometers.
