The
First Year Curriculum
The curriculum of the First Year of Studies is designed to
provide a foundation in liberal education and an opportunity
to explore areas of special interest before declaring a major.
However, students interested in a specific area are encouraged
to take certain courses in their first year to affirm that
interest and to focus study toward that program.
First Year of Studies Curriculum
1
semester of a University Seminar
1 semester of First Year Composition
2 semesters of Mathematics
2 semesters of a Natural Science
2 semesters of Physical Education or ROTC
1 additional university requirement
3 additional courses (program requirements or electives)
Incorporated
into the First Year curriculum are several of the University
Requirements for all Notre Dame students. These are listed
below.

Anticipating
a College Program in the First Year
Students Students are encouraged to use the first year as
a time of exploration and discovery. Experience in a broad
range of areas will enable students to compare before choosing
the program they wish to pursue. One of the features of the
First Year program is that a student can, with guidance, change
plans with little administrative difficulty and without prolonging
the time to graduation.
However,
students who are undecided between Arts & Letters and
Business on the one hand and Science or Engineering on the
other are advised to take the science and math courses recommended
for the Science or Engineering College. It is easier to change
from Science or Engineering to Arts & Letters or Business
than to change in the opposite direction.
Those interested in a specific area will be able to take courses
during the first year to affirm that interest and to focus
study toward that program.
The
College Programs
General
points to considered in choosing a college program are provided
below. Follow the link to the college for more specific information.
College
of Arts & Letters
Generally, students anticipating a program in the College
of Arts & Letters are not expected to choose a major
before the end of the sophomore year. They are encouraged
to use the first year to explore programs that seem attractive
to them. Exceptions are the fine arts, music, pre-med, and
the combination program with engineering; a student who
is considering one of these programs is advised to follow
the course recommendations for the specific program.
Mendoza
College of Business
Students anticipating a program in the College of Business
will not be expected to decide upon a more specialized program
until the second semester of the sophomore year. During
the first year, they are encouraged to take Principles of
Microeconomics. In the sophomore year, the various programs
in business follow a common curriculum, one in which students
get a taste of all the majors offered in business.
College of Engineering
Students who have an interest in the engineering program
should keep their options open by following the recommended
courses in the First Year Curriculum for that college. These
are the same for all College of Engineering programs. Engineering
intents wiill be asked to select a more specific program
by the end of the first year.
College of Science
Students who are interested in science, but unsure about
their choice of program, are advised to choose the one which
is most attractive and to elect courses required by that
program for the first semester. Students undecided in this
area are advised to keep their options open by taking the
highest level of math for which they qualify.
School of Architecture
Students interested in pursuing a degree in Architecture
are expected to take courses from that program within the
first year curriculum. The degree in architecture at Notre
Dame is a five year program and the junior year is spent
in Rome.
