Bonello began his career with research on monetary economics and economic education. He has published work testing alternative hypotheses regarding the term structure of interest rates, evaluating the effectiveness of monetary policy, determining the effectiveness of computers in economic education, assessing learning rates of older and younger students, and the motivation of firms operating in defense industries. His current research focuses on the asymmetric effects of monetary policy on the term structure and alternative treatments of economic growth. Most recently, he has edited Taking Sides: Clashing Views on Controversial Economic Issues (12th edition). He has won college, university, and national teaching awards for the excellence of his teaching.
