The Citizen's Voice founded 1968
Roseland Citizen's Association VOL. XXXI July / August 1998 Issue no. 7 Roseland, Indiana

NOW is the TIME!

VOTE-VOTE-VOTE!!! This will be your last reminder to attend the convention of your political party. Remember these conventions will decide who gets on the November ballot for the general election for the Town Council seat.

Democrats will hold their Convention (Primary or caucus as it was called in the past) on Wednesday,September 9 at 7:00 pm at the town hall.

Candidates are Charlie Landesman and Sam McCombs.

Sam McCombs announced at theJune Town Council meeting that he was withdrawing his name, as he only filed because he thought no one else would, and when he stated that he would support Charles Landesman, his announcement received applause.

As he did not withdraw, and we heard that he and his wife were telling people that he did not plan on withdrawing, Ella Riffel and Dorothy Paul asked him about his plans at the August Town Council meeting. Mr. McCombs stated at that time that he had not decided, and that he had until September 1, 1998 to make that decision. About a week later Mr. McCombs contacted the South Bend Tribune and they printed a story that he was indeed going to run. ???????????????????????????

Republicans will hold their Convention (Primary or caucus as it was called in the past) on WEDNESDAY, September 2 at 7:00 pm at the town hall.

Candidate Julia Kuritz has filed as of this writing.
RCA News

Taste of Roseland Report...Our annual event was a success in that 16 businesses, 22 homes and 9 crafters/special booths took part. It was the most gratifying experience to have one business after another call to sponsor and/or take part in some way. Our special thanks to:

Roseland Family Medical Center, Dr. D. Baxter
Pizza King
Howard Johnson
K.B. Express Mart -Phillips 66
Shimp Roofing
Big C Lumber

Pick-Ups Plus
Roseland Animal Hospital,
Dr. D. Visser
Divine Mercy Gifts
The Strip Shoppe
Affordable Auto Rentals

Many other businesses have told us to be sure to contact them next year since they missed out for the 1998 event. WE CERTAINLY WILL!! Many, many thanks to you wonderful businesses who came through. Without your support, it would not have been such a success.

After all the expenses, RCA realized a profit of $651.75. We took in $978.00, with expenses of $206.25 plus $120 to the Roseland Park!!! That will certainly help with our Newsletter, mailings, children/adult special events and, perhaps, realize some other good works for the town. This doesn't mean for everyone to relax their good intentions. We still need each of you to contribute financially and physically by volunteering/attending/supporting our events and meetings. Plan to help out with our Football Saturday Pancake Breakfasts.... And keep in mind that the children's Halloween/Christmas parties are ahead of us as well as the adult Christmas Tree Trim/decoration of the town hall and perhaps the Dixie Highway (31/33/933??) strip through town. Thanks to the growing participation in the BEST of CHRISTMAS event, more businesses and homes are brightening up that special time of the year. Let's keep that up as a growing tradition of Roseland!!

The Roseland Police Department did a great job with their special set-up to fingerprint all children who came to the park during the Taste of Roseland day. Hopefully, the program will be offered each year and that the number of children I.D.'d will increase. RPD also did a great job "helping" shoppers at the yard sales with their parking!

We plan on some food booths next year also (Wendy's has indicated an interest)... This might add to the attraction?? We want your input!! It takes a village to raise a child.... and a TOWN to completely support the TASTE OF ROSELAND!!!

Thanks again to all!
Ella Riffel, Director of Community Events; Dorothy Paul, Coordinator of the 1998 TASTE of ROSELAND

Town Council News

Please don't litter our beautiful town. Councilman Charlie Shields mentioned that littering is a problem. Also, it would be helpful if residents would pickup litter that may be thrown out on the roadside of their property. Also, Charlie wanted to thank Roseland Garden Center..... the Leonakis family for donating trees that were planted at the end of Rhodes Street. It sure was a GREAT improvement!!

Park News: Special thanks from the Park Board members, Jon Caufman, and Donald Sporleder to the RCA folks who showed up Saturday, July 25th at the Roseland Park for a "paint in." Armed with paint brushes, rollers and donned in old clothes, they took the task of painting over the graffiti on the benches. In 45 minutes! Enjoying the camaraderie, coffee and donuts following were: Freida Humerickhouse, Pat & Glen Klopfenstein, Ella Riffel, Tony Rulli, Gene Szigeti, and Lou & Theresia Valderas. Thanks again for a job well done!!

RCA Picnic Report:

We were pleased to see a good crowd at the picnic on Saturday, August 22nd. Thirty people took part in a nice, hot, humid day. Everyone had a fun time with two "Ice Breaker" games presented by Glen & Pat Klopfenstein, the good food provided by the ladies (and gents), and the prizes. Only three well-behaved children attended and they walked away with some great prizes, too!! Thanks to the Clay Twp (Roseland) VFW for generously letting us borrow their children's games! Thanks to Glen Klopfenstein and Russell Snyder who cooked the bratwursts and hot dogs over the coals. The smell of those roasting links added to the picnic! It was good to see some new faces there also..... and some long-time neighbors Joe Huston and Gordon Langner surprised us in their attendance. It was great to see everybody!! We also thank the Park Board for providing such a nice park and pavilion for all to enjoy. Now if we could just do something about the vandalism.......

Neighborhood Watch

The RCA membership approved the sum of $100 to help with the publication of aNeighborhood Watch booklet by the Roseland Police Department. Marshal Larry Miller wants this program off and running in the very near future. The cost of the booklets (300) was estimated by a local printing company to be approximately $345. RCA has located a source to have them printed at $156 with the RCA doing the stapling. If you would like to donate $$$ towards this project, let Marshal Miller hear from you! (272-6485)

PANCAKE BREAKFAST
Saturday, September 5
Roseland Townhall
Notre Dame vs. Michigan

$4.00 Adult / $2.00 Child(under 9 yrs)
7:00 am to 10:00 am

This event is our first attempt to make some money for the RCA from ND home games. All you can eat pancakes. Coffee, orange juice, milk and sausage (extra sausage available at cost).

Breakfasts are planned for each Notre Dame home game and we need bodies there to make these fund-raiers a success. As usual, volunteers are needed to act as chefts, servers, clean-up, etc. PLEASE don't let a handful do all the work!!! You can consider this community service time - because it is!! Money raised will be for supporting the many projects we would like to see done in Roseland. Fruits of our labor in the past included first aid fits for police cars/ town hall; bulletproof vests & radios for police; tables & chairs for town hall; Christmas decorations for the Highway; kids/adult events; donation to the town entrance signs and many more....

Our heart-felt condolences to the great Hardman family who moved to Roseland in the 1950's, many who still reside within the town. Mickey passed away on July 3rd. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church in her name if you so desire. (Note from Ella:Mickey is the one who talked me into attending the organizational meeting of the RCA back in 1968.... and I've been here ever since! GOOD NEIGHBOR....

Remember in our last Newsletter, we wrote about the episodes of "wandering cement figures" from area homes? Well, thanks to a VERY GOOD NEIGHBOR/BUSINESS, another beautiful new Mother Mary stands amid a small garden at the front of Keith Penrod's modest home on Kent Street. Keith feels very grateful to those who are so kind to him and we, the members of the RCA, are equally proud of those folks at Roseland Garden Center..... the Leonakis family. Thank you for proving that Roseland is a nice place to live.

Congratulations and hats off to you... Congratulations to Jo Cora of N. McCombs St who recently completed a Computer course and is looking forward to an upgrade in her work opportunities.

And congratulations to Chrissy Paul, niece of Dorothy Paul, who received the "Most Valuable Staffer Award" from the South Bend Tribune for her work on the LaSalle High School newspaper "Explorer." Chrissy graduated from LaSalle with honors, and she is now a Freshman at the Hawaii Pacific University (IN HAWAII !!) studying to be a Marine Biologist.... Her Auntie would have loved to have been able to fit in her suitcase!!!
