Review of The Handbook of the Sociology of Education
J. F. Biter, formerly St. Bonaventure University

The editor states that "The aim of [this handbook] is to present the most theoretically grounded and empirically rigorous analysis of schools to date." Without exception the 24 articles fulfill this aim. The work is divided into six major areas: I. Theoretical and Methodological Orientations, consisting of six articles; II. Development and Expansion of Education, four articles; III. The Study of Access to Schooling (three articles); IV. The Study of School Organization (four articles); V. The Study of School Outcomes (five articles); and VI. Policy Implication of Research in the Sociology of Education (two articles). The introduction by Maureen T. Hallinan presents an excellent overview of the development of sociology of education as well as an overview of the book. This work is dedicated to the contributions and memory of James S. Coleman, and a number of the articles address his contributions in a meaningful way. This significant contribution to the sociology of education will set the standards of research in this field for the foreseeable future. Recommended for graduate students, faculty, researchers, and practitioners.
