Interest: First Lego® League (FLL)
This
International program allows children, ages 9 through 14, a chance to
use math and science all while playing
with LEGO's®. Teams of 10 or less create an autonomous robot using
LEGO®Mindstorms Robotics kits as their main parts source. This robot
has to maneuver about a 4'x 8' table, performing tasks for points, in
a finite period of time. Each September, a "Challenge" is
released from FIRST. (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and
Technology). This challenge consists of a topic that will describe what
the robot will need to do, as well as a project that the team needs
to research. At a tournament, teams are judged in several areas. These
include Teamwork, Innovative design, Robust design, Programming, Robot
Performance, and Research, just to name a few.
In 2000, I learned about this program while visiting the FIRST High
School Robotics competition that year in Kissimmee Florida. I introduced
the FLL program to Prairie Vista Elementary in Granger, and coordinated
5 teams of 8 children per team. The goal was to participate in the FLL
tournament held at Purdue University in Ft. Wayne, IN that December.
(Prairie Vista teams took home 5 trophies!)
One of the many parents that I had the pleasure of meeting from the
first year at Prairie Vista Elementary was Dr. Wolfgang Porod. He invited
me to a meeting that would discuss funding possibilities so that the
University of Notre Dame could host an FLL tournament for that year.
Once the funding was available, I was asked by Dr. Porod to help coordinate
the event. On December 2nd, 2001, Notre Dame hosted its first FLL tournament.
It was very successful, hosting 30
teams
from many areas of Indiana. (This was the series of events that brought
me to the Nano Center at Notre Dame. Jan.2002 - June 2006) In December
2006, Notre Dame held its sixth FLL tournament, Nano Quest. After several
years of communications with FIRST, we were proud to have been a part
of the planning for This international program. For more information,

Due to my involvement with the FLL program, in 2001, I was asked to
be a board member of the Penn Harris Madison Education Foundation. This
organization raises money to fund programs, activities, etc. to the
PHM schools. I happily accepted this position which allowed me to not
only spread the word about this wonderful program, but get funding granted
to school teams as well. In the Fall of 2004 I became President of the
Board, continuing to be a part of helping fund worthwhile projects within
the PHM district. I was proud to be part of this organization. Due to
circumstances I needed to resign from being an active member early in
2007.
