Environmental Geochemistry, Mineralogy, and Petrology

This focus area emphasizes the impact of human development and natural Earth processes on the environment. Research opportunities range from understanding the fate of metals and organic molecules in the environment (e.g., sorption of metals onto bacterial and mineral surfaces, microbial transport of metals, release of metals from nuclear waste in geological repositories, metal-release from automobiles) to the development of large igneous provinces on Earth and other planets.
