The Task Force on Communicating the Directions and Goals of the University Libraries met on February 7th at 1:00 p.m..
 
 

I. Next meeting was scheduled for February 14th from 10:30 to 12:00pm.
 
 

II. Reports on elements of the strategic planning process

A. Theresa regarding an organizational mandates 1. defined as "influences"; can be internal or external

2. no evidence of formal analysis within the Libraries but certainly inherent in various statements

3. Example: copyright laws

B. Cameron regarding an organization's vision statement 1. definition and contrast with mission statement a. mission – states who an organization is and what it’s purpose is

b. philosophy – states principles and values of an organization

c. vision – explains what are we able to do

2. vision statement is future oriented

3. characteristics of a vision statement: bold, daring, vivid, people oriented, written in present tense, identifies benefits vs. features, people can associate with it

C. Melodie regarding an organization's mission statement 1. Distributed examples of mission statements and an article indicating what should and should not be in a mission statement D. Parker regarding strategic issues 1. Defined strategic issues as consequences for not meeting challenges

2. Apparent in Challenges & Directions statements

III. Next Steps:
 
  A. Define and evaluate statements in isolation, then in conjunction with other statements.

B. Communicate Results.
 
 

IV. Review of charge and measurement of progress

A. The group reviewed the charged as outlined below and checked off completed tasks (shown in red)

1. Put statements into framework of a strategic plan a. foster more effective communication

b. assist staff in understanding statements

c. define types of statements

d. organize them into those categories

e. identify areas of interest represented

f. map the content to those areas

g. present results in a manner for easy understanding

2. Assess current state of strategic planning a. role of a strategic plan
