Requirements
July 5 -11, 2009

Admission into African American Scholars is selective.  Students applying for this special program must be prepared to give as much as they receive in terms of active thought and participation in class discussions.  Accepted students are typically high academic achievers and leaders in their high schools and communities.  A well conceived and executed essay that addresses the student’s cultural and leadership experience will weigh greatly on the admission decision as will a strong teacher or counselor recommendation.

Accepted students to the Scholars seminar meet the following requirements:

  • Ethnicity: African American students or students whose identity and experiences resonate with the context and focus of the seminar.
  • Catholic students: Attending Catholic, public, or private schools
  • Non-Catholic students: Attending Catholic high schools
  • Leadership: Demonstrated leadership abilities in school, church, community, and/or social organizations (e.g. class officers, youth ministers, community leaders, etc.)
  • Year: High school students who will enter their senior year fall 2009 who plan to attend college immediately after high school.
  • Academics: Students who have pursued the most rigorous curriculum offered in their high schools (e.g. AP or honors courses) and have demonstrated academic excellence
  • Standardized test scores: SAT and ACT scores must be provided. PSAT and PLAN scores will be accepted if SAT or ACT scores are unavailable.

If you meet these criteria and are interested in participating in the Scholars program, we invite you to submit an on-line application.

If you are unsure about eligibility for African American Scholars feel free to contact the Office of Pre-College Programs at 574.631.0990 or precoll@nd.edu.
